The Awakening Option 4
The particular attitude or tradition that the author is trying to modify is the law of woman’s rights and what women went through during this period of time. The techniques the author uses to influence the readers views is through point of view of Edna, the setting of the story, and also through characterization. The story, “The Awakening”, takes place in the late 1800's and during this time women did not have many rights and were almost a tool to men. In the story Edna is the main character and we see what this time was like and what women went through.
Edna is a strong character who felt like she lived a lot of her adult life as a tool to the male race. During the time of the late 1800's women did not have hardly any rights and the men took care of most things. For example, women could not vote, and also most women did not have jobs because they in charge of taking care of the house and the children. Edna did not like this and she felt almost as if she was a slave. In the story we get to see everything through Edna's point of view and the author does this to help us understand how it felt to be in the situation as a women of their time.
The author also influences the readers by using characterization through Edna, Mademoiselle. Reisz and Adele. Adele was know as the ideal mother who loved her family and did most everything for them. Mademoiselle was a single women who took care of herself and didn't have to worry about anyone else. Then for Edna she was in between, she had a family, but she was not that close to them and did not put much effort towards her family. The author uses these characters to show different women in different situations and how they live in this peiod of time.
The last thing the author uses to influence the readers is through the setting of the story. He contrast the setting of Grand Isle and New Orleans and how both places were different for Edna. In New Orleans, the city, or civilization, symbolizes oppression by societal demands, while the island, or wilderness, symbolizes freedom from society's watch. When Edna is residing in the city, she is weighed down by society's expectations of her. On the other hand, when she is on the island for the summer, Edna is freed from many of her duties. Her husband is on business and her kids spend time playing on the beach, this then gives her time to do what she wants.
These are the particular attitudes and traditions that the author is trying to modify about the law of woman’s rights and what women went through during this period of time and these are some techniques the author uses to influence the readers views. Woman’s rights were a very big thing during this time and the author uses these different techniques to help us understand what it was like to be a women during this period of time.
