The Potters Wheel is a ministry located on 333 Jefferson Ave, on the south side of Evansville Indiana. The Potters Wheel was created in 2003 whenever The First Cumberland Peesbyterian Church was scheduled to close. The ministry was created by the OHCC, “Oak Hill Christian Center” whenever the neighborhood was in a decline and had become known for drugs, prostitutes, and other criminal activity.
The Potters Wheel started as an outreach of OHCC ministry, at first offering Sunday afternoon worship services and human services programs throughout the week. They then began an Adopt-a-Block program in which Volunteers started going door-to-door every Saturday to meet families in the neighborhood. Also to assess needs, provide assistance, make referrals to other social service agencies when appropriate to pray with neighbors. As a result of all of this, they received feedback from the families with a clothing bank, a food pantry and soup kitchen that were organized to meet the needs in the surroundings.
The Potters Wheel was organized as a separate entity from OHCC and became incorporated on October 3, 2003. It then received a 501©3 status in June of 2004. The Potters Wheel was then able to focus on program expansion, and now offers eight programs to support spiritual, physical, emotional and educational deployment.
A couple of the programs that they offer are The Baby Basic classes, which teaches parents life skills and skills to help when receiving a child. Another program is the Epic 13 program which is where it gives at risk youth kids a safe community and a place to learn mentally and spiritually. Also there is the Adult worship services and bible study which provides many neighborhood residents with spiritual support and direction.
This ministry has been able to help a neighborhood who was in a decline, and change them into a hole new community. They have been able to help this community, also including the lords message into it.
