Senior Service Learning Project Self Evaluation
For the past 6 months I have been helping out at the Potter’s Wheel every Thursday night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. I go there and help children from a wide range of ages and I help them with learning about God and also about what the Bible is and what it says. After working with these children for such a long period of time I have been able to learn a lot, but I have also been able to build a relationship with each of the children. Before this occurred I never thought that I would enjoy volunteering and I felt as if it would not be something for me, but after it’s all said and done, it has helped me grow and become more responsible as a person.
Working with these children for over 50 hours of my time I have grown to love these kids as if they were a part of my family. Although not ever kid was perfect and we may have had trouble with some, I still believe that each and every one of them is a great kid. Some of the children I have grown a bigger relationship then with the others, but I still try and make every one of them feel as special as the other.
My senior project has made me realize how much volunteering helps and means to people whenever it is something as easy as just giving up some of your time. It is amazing to me how much these children look up to me and it warms my heart to know that these children actually care about me and will miss me after the time is over. This experience has helped me realize that I am really good with kids, but also that kids enjoy working with me and that if you find something in common with one another it makes it so much easier to connect with one another.
While attending this church every Thursday I have been able to watch these children grow, smile, and want to come back because of how much fun they have. These children do not receive much and whenever they are here they feel as if it is the best time ever. We feed them, play games with them and have fun, but all while learning about the word of God and what it means. Some of these children are so young and may not seem like they know what’s going on, but after working with them and watching them, you can see that they do understand the lesson and are actually having fun doing it.
My senior project has helped me to realize that volunteering is something so easy, but also means so much and if you take just a little bit of time out of your day to help someone else, it really does mean a lot. After putting in all my hours and helping out, I feel as if I am going to keep doing it after it is all over. I really enjoyed learning about what volunteering does and I would really enjoy keep doing it later on in life. This project has helped me learn a lot and should me something that I really enjoy doing.
