Invisible Man Essay Assignment
Orville Prescott reviews the book, “Invisible Man”, by Ralph Ellison and tells the audience about how ravishing and stunning the book is. He starts out by saying that the novel is a impressive fiction by an American negro. He then explains how great of a writer Ralph Ellison is and how he has wrote a very sensational and feverishly emotional book, and while it may shock and sicken some readers it does although appear to be a great novel by a richly talented writer. Mr. Prescott then goes into detail about how Ralph Ellison began and how he has written the book.
Once done educating the readers about Ralph Ellison he then starts to explain the novel and tells the readers what the book is about but then also explains it in the way that he saw it whenever he had read it. He starts by “This is a story of adventures, shock and disillusionments of a young Southern Negro,” and how he journeys through Harlem’s slough of despond. The story is written in first person and is divide into a series of major episodes. He explains how with Ralph Ellison, with his gruesome power has been able to give, “Invisible Man”, the frenzied tention of a nightmare.
To me Orville Prescott has done a very good job in explaining in full detail about the story and all the situations in it. He is able to describe many different and important scenes in the novel, and has been able to express the story in a way to get your attention and make you want to read this novel. Mr. Prescott is able to take this novel that he read and show to other potential readers that it is a story of a lifetime that you can not miss.
Like I explained, Orville Prescott does an amazing job explaining the novel to the potential readers, but he does it in a way that could come acrossed as a biased and some what racist way. Instead of using words like African American or just explaining that he is a different race, he uses the word negro a lot, and it comes across as if he is trying to downgrade the character.
Mr. Prescott also ends his passage in a way that i think could've been put in a very better and different way. He ends it by saying, “ No one interested in books by or about American Negroes should miss it.” He had just went from making the potential readers being from a very broad selection, to a very select few. The way he had ended this it has made it seem like that only people that like African American history and novels are the only ones that should read this. He has been able to make the novel seem like it is one of the best readings of a long time and that everyone should read it and then he messes it up by taking that variety and bringing it down to a very less selection.
Orville Prescott uses his literary techniques to explain this book in full detail and is able to draw people to want to read this book.
